Marion Brody (Kelly)

KELLY WINSTON-SALEM Marion Brody Kelly November 5, 2013 Marion Brody Kelly passed from this life on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Edward (Winston-Salem), her son Joe (Washington DC), her mother Judith Brody (Winston-Salem), her brother Michael Brody and wife Anne Brody (Chicago, IL), two nieces Clare and Grace Brody (New Haven CT), sister Deborah Brody Britton and husband Tim Britton (Winston-Salem), and her dogs Jake and Sam. Marion was born in Chicago, IL to Stanton (deceased) and Judith, and raised in Glencoe IL. She graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier OH, and returned to Chicago where she met and married Ed. The couple moved to Winston-Salem in 1979. For several years Marion owned and operated Rainbow News and Caf? with her sister and a friend. The independent bookstore/newsstand/caf? was the first business of its kind in North Carolina. At age 40 Marion returned to school to earn a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education at Salem College, and taught Kindergarten at Bolton Elementary School, where early in her career she was named Teacher of the Year. She never walked away from anything she felt needed to be done, whether that meant rescuing a bird, supporting a cause she believed in, or helping a loved one. Marion loved a good book with a strong narrative, authors who care about their characters, the idea of time travel, the humor of Monty Python, the Marx Brothers, Young Frankenstein, the blues, a good meal shared with good friends, the Cubs, the Democratic Party, and dark (but not too dark) chocolate. She was a born teacher, and never tired of the wonder of leading children in to the world of reading. The family thanks the many friends and caregivers who loved and supported her over her life and over the past six months. A celebration of Marion's life will be held at a time to be announced. In honor of her memory, gifts may be made to Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home (Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Attention: Finance, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103) or the Marion B. Kelly Fund for Bolton School, 5645 Murray Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Online condolences may be made at www.frankvoglerandsons.com.

Marion had such a gentle spirit and was so sweet to everyone.   I did not know her at NTE but I was friends with her at Kenyon College.  She had a great smile, and I appreciated the kindness she shared. For her family and friends and students, I am so very for your loss of Marion.  With deepest sympathy, Lynn Cuthbert
